Did you get an allowance growing up? If so, how much? A whopping $10 a week (which was a lot back then!)

What did you have to do to get your allowance? Well, we used to clean the house to The Sound of Music. I usually had to mow the grass and then we (my two brothers and I) would rotate our sheep-feeding schedule, i.e. who would carry the water, grain etc. out to the barn.

What was your first paying job? I worked at the local jewelry store.

Why the Jewelry store? It was the only one in town.

What did you do at the jewelry store? Sold jewelry, but my favorite was selling class rings and signet bracelets as I got to do the engraving on them.

What was your first paying theatre job? Assistant Company Manager on the national touring company of Carousel.

How did you get the job on Carousel? By interviewing.

What is the first thing you remember saving up for? My high school class ring.
P.S. I haven’t worn it since.

What made it worth saving for? It was solid gold!

Do you remember what crests you choose on either side? Yes, on one side it was music and then the comedy/tragedy mask on the other. I think the stone was blue.

Are you currently saving for anything special? Retirement!

When would you like to retire? How about tomorrow.

No matter how much money you have or don’t have, is there something you can’t live without?
2 dogs Rudy and Fergie (Springer Spaniels)

If you were to treat yourself to a nice meal out, where would you go?
The Olive Garden….seriously!

What is your favorite meal at The Olive Garden? Whole Wheat linguine with Bolognese sauce because it is the cheapest thing on the menu. Of course, you can’t forget the salad and breadsticks.

Do you have a specific story about when you first realized you had “made it” in NYC?
Meeting Shirley Jones at the opening of Carousel in Los Angeles.

How long were you on the Carousel tour? A year and a half.

Do you remember how much you made back then? I think it was $500 or maybe I got a raise and it was $600 a week.

What is your favorite free thing to do in NYC?
Ride my bike in Riverside Park

Why? Not only is it beautiful but it is only _ block from my house. I enjoy Central Park too, but it is further away.

How did you learn the value of a dollar?
My parents were very influential in my ability to pinch a penny (which, by the way, drives my partner crazy J).

How were your parents influential? We didn’t have any money, but we never knew that. We thought we had all the money in the world. Both my parents were teachers and they saved enough to put all three of us through college.

Charlie started his career as a company manager working on such shows as Carousel, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Wild Party. Then he decided to change things up and try his hand at stage management. He set out for the Bahamas working on Jimmy Buffets Musical Don’t Stop the Carnival. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. He has continued building his resume as a Stage Manager working on Thoroughly Modern Millie, Bombay Dreams, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The History Boys and now the revival of Les Misérables.
